Would You Put Out A Fire With Gasoline?

Of Course Not.

So, Why Eat Acidic Foods When Your Body Is Already Working Overtime To Remove Toxic Acids From Your Body?

The above statement may seem like common sense. However, the reality is that the vast majority of people (especially those in the running community) are taught that eating sugars and “carbo-loading” are the best way to fuel your body for optimal performance.

Many runners are simply learning this information from other runners and assuming that it is true because “that’s what all the other runners do.” At Stride to Health, we feel that this is the equivalent of those who thought the earth was flat many years ago. The majority of the people believe something just because somebody else told them so and then never question the norm. So, everybody thought the earth was flat…after all, it does appear that way from our perspective.

And you know how that one turned out.

We believe that nutrition should be about health…whether you run or not. Most health professionals would never advise somebody to eat more sugar and more pasta. So why should runners be an exception?

The Professionals At Stride To Health Are Not Shy About Saying That Conventional Running Nutrition IS WRONG AND UNHEALTHY.

The Stride to Health approach to nutrition is based on simple science and physiological facts. Specifically, our professionals base their nutritional strategies on “pH balance.”

You’ve probably learned about the pH scale in your high school chemistry class or perhaps you have a swimming pool and you’re supposed to check the pH level of the water. The pH scale simply measures how acidic or how alkaline a substance is.

The pH scale runs from 0 to 14, where 7 is neutral. Anything below 7 is considered an acid, while anything above 7 is considered alkaline.

Understanding the pH scale and how acid effects your body is crucial if you want to obtain optimum health.

The pH level of your blood is slightly alkaline at 7.365 (or at least it’s supposed to be). When you consume too much acid through diet and don’t eliminate the acid properly, your bloodstream can become a toxic wasteland where acid is dumped into the bloodstream and tissues.

And for athletes, the acid load on the body is even greater as acids are a natural waste product produced by your cells. The more you exercise, the more acid waste is produced.

For the most part, your body is designed to deal with these acids by removing them from the body. Your kidneys filter the blood and excrete acids through urine, your skin releases acids through sweat glands, and your lungs exhale carbon dioxide which is an acidic gaseous waste. Healthy people also have alkaline reserves to neutralize acids and help to remove them from your body.

Whether You’re A New Runner Or An Experienced Runner, These pH Balancing Strategies Will Help You To Run Longer And With Less Soreness.

The whole purpose of these processes is to maintain the alkaline design of the body. However, most people consume excessive amounts of acid and do not do enough to remove acids from the body. Eventually, your body cannot keep up with the acid overload. It’s like trying to save a large ship from sinking using only a small bucket to bail out water.

This is when your body has to resort to other methods to deal with these acids. These methods include:

  • Binding acids with fat cells and parking the fat cells in your fat storage areas (i.e. love handles, hips, abdomen).
  • Allow the acids to accumulate in your muscles and tendons, leading to pain and weakness, and making you more prone to injury as the acid “eats away” at your muscles and tendons.
  • Breaking down your body to use alkaline minerals to neutralize acids. Your body will leach calcium from bones and magnesium from muscles to neutralize acids leaving your bones and muscles very prone to breakdown.

As you can imagine, when your body resorts to these methods to deal with acid, you are not in a good state of health.

So, the major problem with the conventional running nutrition and the use of sugars and carbo-loading is that sugars and starchy carbohydrates are HIGHLY acidic. While you are exercising, your body is already working hard to get rid of the acid wastes produced by your cells. By consuming even more acid, you’re just adding more fuel to the fire.

The end result is impaired acid removal from the body. This means that the acids will build up in your body. This acid build up is what causes soreness and injuries and makes running “not fun.”

But It Doesn’t End There.

As your blood becomes more acidic, it turns into a “sludge” as the acids impair the electromagnetic charges of your red blood cells. Without the proper charges, your red blood cells begin to clump together. This will make it more difficult for your blood to deliver oxygen to your muscles.

Dr. Robert Young is an expert at analyzing acid’s effect on blood.  Check out this video to learn more:

If you’re not getting oxygen to your muscles, they muscle cells must then depend on burning sugar instead of fat for fuel. As you burn sugar, you are producing more acids than you would if you were to burn fat. In addition, if you’re not delivering enough oxygen to your cells, you’ll feel low on energy and lose your desire to exercise.

More acid enters your bloodstream…and they cycle continues.

So What’s The Solution? What Do You Have To Eat And Drink For Optimum Health?

The solution is simple:

  • Consume less acidic foods and drinks (sugars, meat, dairy, caffeine, alcohol, and others)
  • Eat more alkaline foods (alkaline fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and healthy salts)
  • Super-hydrate your body with alkaline fluids (alkaline water, “green drinks”)
