How does low-level laser therapy work?

Low-level laser therapy uses the energy in laser light (photons) to stimulate healing.  Your body is able to use this energy to stimulate cellular activity.  This light energy can penetrate up to 2 inches deep inside your body.  In some ways, it is similar to how a tree uses photosynthesis by using sunlight to produce food/energy for the tree.

Since energy can be neither created nor destroyed, your body will use this light energy and make the most of it by using it to increase cellular activity.  This increased cellular activity can result in increased blood vessel activity and increased collagen production, both of which help to accelerate the healing process.

Low-level laser therapy is still a relatively new technology and there are more studies coming out all the time.  With these studies will come an even better understanding of the power of laser therapy and the exact mechanisms in which it works.

What types of injuries does laser therapy treat?

Low-level laser therapy has been show to be effective with many different types of injuries and on many different body parts.  It’s been shown to accelerate healing with bone, tendon, muscle, and skin.  Low-level laser therapy has also been shown to help decrease inflammation and pain.

Low-level laser therapy has helped people with:

  • Arthritis
  • Back Pain
  • Bursitis/Tendonitis
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Heel Spur/Plantar Fascitis
  • Migraines
  • Wounds
  • And much more…

Is low-level laser therapy safe?

Low-level laser therapy is considered to be very safe, non-toxic, and non-invasive.  The only warnings with laser therapy are to avoid direct beaming of the laser into the eye and to avoid laser therapy over a fetus.  During your visit you will wear protective eye wear as a precaution.  Because the laser is “low-level” there is no need to worry about burning or overheating tissue as the low-level lasers are not designed to heat tissue.

How do I know if laser therapy will help with my pain/injury?

While we believe that low-level laser therapy can help a lot of people, we realize that it will not help everybody.  The only real way to know if laser therapy will help with your condition is to try it.  To schedule your FREE trial treatment, call us at (860) 325-0RUN (0786)

What kind of studies have been done on low-level laser therapy?

Low-level laser therapy got it’s “claim to fame” in a 1995 study with workers for General Motors who were suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome.  The study showed that the group of workers receiving laser therapy had more workers return to work and the laser therapy group had greater grip strength after completion of treatment.

Since then, many studies have been done on various types of injuries and conditions.  As is typical in research of procedures or medications, some studies showed that laser therapy had a positive effect, while other studies showed that laser therapy had no significant effect on patient outcomes.

If you’d like to learn more about the various studies, please contact our office and we are happy to share the literature with you.

Do I need a prescription for low-level laser therapy?

No.  In Connecticut, you can access the services of a physical therapist directly without a prescription.

What will I experience during a laser therapy treatment?

You’ll be positioned comfortably while your physical therapist places the wand of the laser over the area to be treated.  You may feel a slight tingling sensation or you may feel nothing at all.  Because the laser is “low-level” there is no thermal effect and you will not feel heat, though a very mild warmth can sometimes be associated with the tingling sensation felt by some.

Some patients will notice an improvement after one treatment, while others may notice improvement 2-3 hours after the treatment was performed.  Most conditions will need 2 to 9 treatments for your symptoms to completely go away.  Chronic conditions may require ongoing treatment.

How long does a laser therapy treatment take?

On average, a typical treatment will last 10-15 minutes.  This can vary depending on the body part being treated and the number of body parts being treated.  For example, a patient with back pain covering a large part of the back may require a 20-40 minute treatment depending on severity of pain.

Why is it called “low-level laser therapy”?

“Low-level” refers to the fact that these lasers are not the typical lasers you may think of such as those used during surgeries which can cut through human flesh.  “Low-level” lasers are set to a different power and wave-length which allows the laser energy to penetrate the body without a heating effect.  For this reason, low-level laser therapy may also be referred to “cold laser” therapy.
